Ethics, Bioethics, and Biosafety Committee (CEBB)

It is a collegiate body, attached to the University of Concepción's Vice-Rector's Office for Research and Development,whose mission is to ensure the application of ethical and bioethical principles and safety standards.
The Committee is responsible for evaluating compliance and will rule on the ethical, bioethical, and biosafety aspects of scientific research and artistic creation conducted at the University of Concepción or with its sponsorship. This is especially relevant to those involving the participation of human beings, the use of models of animals, plants, microorganisms, and/or their respective biological samples, which will be applicable to:
Academic and non-academic staff
Postgraduate students
Undergraduate students, together with the professor responsible
Members of the permanent or transitory University Community that carry out research and/or artistic creation activities at the University of Concepción

Roles
Proposing specific regulations to the University Authorities that the University's Units must comply with regarding ethics, bioethics, and biosafety.
Informing applicants of the minimum documentation required for research and artistic creation projects to be submitted to the Committee's evaluation process.
Verifying the applications of the University Community.
Requesting meetings with researchers and/or experts in the area when deemed necessary.
Following up during the project's implementation according to a periodicity schedule established by the Committee, depending on the project's nature.
Requesting the necessary information from the responsible researcher prior to project approval.
Issuing the instructions that projects must comply with to be submitted to the Committee.
Issuing corresponding forms to facilitate the evaluation procedures.
Advising the Ethics and/or Bioethics and Biosafety Committees of the Faculties or Academic Units of the University of Concepción.
Granting certificates of compliance.

Documents required for the evaluation of projects
The Researcher Responsible or Project Director must submit their project for evaluation through an application on the Committee Platform, which must have the following documentation, as appropriate:
Initial assessment requests
- Letter of request for review and evaluation addressed to the Chairperson of the Ethics, Bioethics, and Biosafety Committee.
- Letter of commitment from the responsible researcher. (download model)
- Complete proposal of the approved project, including abstract in Spanish, general and specific objectives, methodology, work plan, and/or Gantt chart.
- Report of the Ethics, Bioethics and Biosafety Committee of the Faculty or Academic Unit to which it is attached.
- Informed consents and/or informed approval (in human studies).
- Relevant authorizations and permits.
- In cases where the project involves animal models, an animal management and care protocol form must be included, in accordance with national or international guidelines.
- Express and written authorization of the Dean of the respective Faculty for the research activities subject to this Regulation.
Additional documentation (as applicable):
- Curriculum Vitae of the Responsible Researcher and Co-researchers. In a postgraduate thesis: CV of the student and the Academic Advisor.
- Certificate of regular postgraduate student (with registered thesis).
- Document certifying the award of the project.
- List of chemical substances referred to in Articles 61 and 66 of Supreme Decree No. 594..
- Corresponding safety protocols for each substance.
- Biosafety Form
Evaluation requests for FOLLOW-UP/FINAL REPORTS
a) Letter of request for review and evaluation addressed to the Chairperson of the Ethics, Bioethics, and Biosafety Committee.
b) Complete proposal of the approved project (abstract in Spanish, general and specific objectives, methodology, work plan, and/or Gantt chart).
c) Copy of the ethics, bioethics, and/or biosafety certificate issued at the beginning of the project.
d) Copy of the amendment report modifying the original project, together with the supporting documents (if applicable).
e) Progress or final report prepared by the researcher, as appropriate.
f) Executive summary indicating the total or partial fulfillment of the specific objectives, with the respective justification in case of partial fulfillment.
g) For human biological samples, attach the applicable Informed Consent model.
Deadline for receipt of projects
The revision request must be submitted to the Committee within 10 working days of the project's approval or award.
Project review deadline
The deadline for the Committee's review of the project is 30 working days from receipt of the request, which may be extended by 15 days for well-founded reasons.

La The National Research and Development Agency (ANID) provides the research community with a document containing Guidelines for the ethical evaluation of research in social sciences and humanities on and involving people.
This document presents a set of guidelines developed with consideration of current international and national visions in the field of scientific research ethics, and their applicability in the national context.
The document provides ideas for researchers in these disciplines, as well as for members of Research Ethics Committees and other scientific commissions. However, it can also contribute to other areas that investigate and involve people using social research tools.

Las normas de bioseguridad contenidas en este Manual son entregadas a la comunidad científica como herramienta de apoyo que permita ser eficaz a la hora de encontrar los requerimientos de bioseguridad de cada área de desarrollo, y así velar por la correcta manipulación en el laboratorio, cumpliendo la normativa legal existente.
